The romanian-singapore saga

Dr Silviu Ionescu- the man who caused the storm

MFA to meet Romanian Ambassador to discuss Ionescu Case on thursday
Singapore’s Foreign Ministry’s spokesman has said the meeting with Mr Aurelian Neagu, the Romanian Ambassador to Singapore, will take place on Thursday at its ministry.

The ministry had summoned Mr Neagu to a meeting to discuss the issue of former Charge d’Affaires Dr Silviu lonescu’s diplomatic immunity and other aspects of the case.

Earlier this week, Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo told Parliament that Interpol’s Red Notice of arrest against Silviu Ionescu has been suspended.

This is due to disagreement between the two countries as to whether the Romanian diplomat had immunity at the time of accident last December.

To give some background on this particular article. This particular man Dr silviu Ionescu was the charge d' affaires ad interim of the romanian diplomatic mission in singapore. He has been accused of running past two red traffic lights with his black audi A6 which bore diplomatic number plates. Hitting 3 pedestrians on a pedestrian crossing, injuring two and killing one. The deceased, malaysian Bong Hwee How, suffered severe head injuries and died after three days in hospital. Evidence has been found pinpointing him as the prime suspect.
However extradition has proven difficult due to the lack of an extradition treaty between romania and singapore and his alleged diplomatic immunity at the time of the incident
